Scream 7 was released in theaters on February 27, and most fans have left some pretty scary looking reviews. This film starts off by introducing Sidney Prescott’s new daughter, Tatum Evans. Unfortunately, Tatum is now the target of ghostface as she tries to navigate her life with a previous victim of ghostface as her mother. This created many parallels to previous Scream movies that created nostalgia and didn’t go unnoticed.
A good majority of the fans were debating on boycotting the movie due to extreme controversy in November of 2023. After Scream 6, actress Melissa Barrera (played Sam in the last two movies) was fired after some pretty intense behind the scenes drama, eventually leading up to Jenna Ortega (played Tara in the last two movies) leaving as well. This left most fans feeling conflicted on where they stand.
As for Scream 7, the plot felt weak and rushed, which usually isn’t an issue for the movie series. Most fans felt let down towards the ending, especially because it wasn’t anywhere close to what fans have been asking for. This is hard to simply come back from even though there are now rumors of a potential Scream 8 movie in production.
Scream 7 was the lowest rated one in the entire franchise, with a current 32% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 5.9/10 on IMDb. The majority of the reviews were because of the weak ghostface reveal at the end. The original Scream film had an incredible double-villain story, which is half the reason why it is one of the most popular in slasher movie history. Scream 7 just simply didn’t deliver that, making the film seem rushed or even unfinished. It truly seems so unlike the franchise, considering that it has been very consistent with its success up until now. This is extremely disappointing for a film series with such a huge fanbase.
Freshman Kaitlyn Zamora is a fan of the franchise who felt let down by the new horror film. “Honestly, the film wasn’t good and very disappointing. I feel like it should’ve been more scary if anything” Zamora said. Freshman Lucia Antonelle also gives her thoughts. “In my opinion Scream 7 was very underwhelming compared to the previous movies, it felt like a let down” Antonelle said. Since this specific film is rated the lowest, it’s upsetting to not see improvement from the previous films.
Overall, Scream 7 received more backlash than expected, making fans and critics very upset with how the storyline left off. If there are any more movies in production, hopefully they will make up for this one.
