This year in New Jersey the winter feels like it’s longer than usual but it actually hasn’t been. According to Climate Central, every year the winter gets shorter by 9 days, but it also gets colder. The weather this year was very severe and there was more snow than in previous years. For example, in Newark, New Jersey some places got over 53 inches of snow before the end of winter. Last year some parts of New Jersey only got about 30 to 40 inches of snow the whole winter.
Aubrey Beal, a skier and a hater of winter, thinks the season felt shorter than years past. She skis a lot during the winter but it doesn’t make her miss the summer any less. She enjoys tanning, the sun, hanging out with friends, and vacation. According to Beal one of the only good parts about winter is getting able to dress in warm comfy clothes. Beal also thinks it can affect how you feel. “The cold definitely makes people more moody because like in the morning you’re waking up in the darkness” Beal said.
Gabriella Costa, loves the vibe of winter but hates the cold. “I like being warm inside and watching the snowfall and watching a good TV show, especially during Christmas, like having that fire cackling sound, especially like feeling the warmth of the fire and watching movies” Costa said. But she believes this winter did seem longer than most because the snow started in November. She does winter track so she is outside a lot during the cold weather.
Cold weather makes a lot of people feel worse from the low amount of serotonin from the sun. Most people have less motivation from the cold dry weather that makes them tired which causes a lot of people to become lazy. This is called “winter blues” Even though most people have different opinions about the season, many people agree that this cold season has been different than others.
